Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a developmental disorder that affects how a person communicates, interacts with others, and experiences the world around them. The term "spectrum" is used because the symptoms and their severity can vary greatly from person to person.

Living with ASD can bring about a wide range of emotions and experiences, and how people with ASD feel varies depending on the individual, their environment, the support they receive, and their specific challenges and strengths. Some people may feel a mix of challenges and rewards, while others may experience significant emotional struggles or find joy and fulfillment in their own unique ways.  It’s important to remember that no two people with ASD are alike.

It is also important for those around individuals with ASD—whether family members, friends, or educators—to be aware of the emotional experiences that may accompany the disorder and offer empathy, support, and validation. Creating an environment where individuals with ASD can be themselves, pursue their interests, and manage their challenges can make a profound difference in how they feel about themselves and their place in the world.
